There are indications that the number of workless men v in the city is decreasing, and tho condition of things to-day was not nearly so acute as it was earlier in the week. Some unemployed painters started wqrk for the City Council to-day. They havo been put to painting lamp-posts, and are to work for six ihours a day, as the 'Painters' Union aro providing half the funda for the work, ,the men to receivo work are being nominated by the union, Twelve unemployed wero sent North by the Maori this evening, for bushfolling at Waitotara, Tho Labour Bureau is > oJso sending atrambeT to all'jparts of Now Zealand in response to casual requests for men.
A suggestion that the Town Hall should be painty was made \by Councillor Cnrmichapl at last night 1 a meeting of tho City Council, He considered that the work was not unnecessary, and would provide/ work for a number of the> ( unemployed painters.
