Tho fire brigade received a call at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoonj for an-outbreak of firo in a small cottago in Amesbury Street, owned by Mr. C. Rush and occupiod by Mr.' Keay. Vory little damage was done. Tlie'fire, it seems,. originated in tho front - room, and the. paper on tho walls was burnt off. A< few buckets of water had practically settled matters before the brigade arrived. Tho house was insured for £200. John Sassi a prohibited young man,'was before Mr. A, D. Thomson, S.JL, yesterday morning.on a charge of drunkenness.'.. Constablo Fiulaysori, in evidence, stated that ho was called to Campbell Street at a late hour on Monday night, because of accused's violent behaviour in his liome. When the constable arrived, ho found Sass breaking the furniture and windows, -and using violent language. Constable Connor also gavo evidence to. the effect l that ho had been called to the scene by a telephone message stating that a man was smashing up his' home. In reply to accused, Constable Finlayson ■ admitted that he had knocked him' down, but had done so in self-defence. Sass admitted, that he was knocking things about and had smashed ® window, and some furniture, but declared that he was not drunk, although he had been drinking. .His Worship said that 'ho considered that tho police had been very lenient in only charging accusod with, drunkenness, as ho might easily have' been charged with more'serious offences.He was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment/ ~ . ...
