The Artillery Efficiency Shield, won by the Petone Navals, was presented to the company last:night, by Colonel Beauchop, who also inspected the men. The Petone Band was iii attendance. Lieutenant Ellis was in command, and Chaplain ltussell was present. The parade strength-was about fifty. In ; presenting the shield, the Colonel remarked that the iustructor had stated that he had no possible doubt that the Petone corps was tho winner, and it was a matter for congratulation that the corps was successful on four consecutive occasions, showing that thore had been 110 possibility of a fluke. The Chief of the General Staff (Colonel Robin) also wished him to express his high appreciation of tho meritorious performance. No doubt tho camaraderie and enthusiasm of the company largely account«d ' for their great success. Ho had great pleasure in presenting the shield to the company. (Applause.) Diplomas were also presented to Privates ; James Ryan, Cairns, Holloway, Dawson, Ferguson, and Chandler. THE, NEW WEST . PETONE SCHOOL. ' ; . Tho election of the Sphool Committee to administer the affairs of the West Petone School will take place. this evening at 1 the Main School,, at' 8 o'clock. It is probable that about 30 candidates, including two ladies, will offer themselves for- election. A ticket is being promoted in tho interests of the Bible-in-Scliools. The' Education Board has requested Mr; D. M'Kenzie, chairman of the Main School Committee, to attend: Songs, recitations, etc., will bo given while the balloting is. being proceeded with. •' JOTTINGS. -' : - A meeting of Petone citizens is to be held on Friday night, to make arrangements to publicly recognise the services rendered to che. borough by Mr. E. Greatbatch, tho retiring postmaster. - Borough Council! did not reach finality in its consideration 1 of tho rates and estimates for tho year 011 Monday night, and a special meeting for the purpose will be held oriMonday .evening. The gas agreement 'between. Hutt *and Petone has been adopted by the. former council, on the condition that the time allowed for the extension, of: the works is reduced from two years to one.
Mr. -T. W. - Caverhill : had the misfortune to lose a ctrap-horse- on Monday evening, as the .result of an accident, The t 'animal was in a stable,,biit got out by some.means, and took a jump over tho garden:gate. Failing to leap high'enough, it was impaled on, the wooden rails,-and had to bo destroyed. The Epuni Football Club has decided not to amalgamate'with tho Kia Ora.Club, as proposed. Tho 'former .club is desirous of securing a piece of' land for a gymnasium, and are approaching the River Board to that end. The cost of the site is between £60 and £70. :- . - '"v.--.
.A meeting of the Hutt- Park Committee will be held on -Friday- evening at Petone, to deal with . tho question of tree-planting on the park on Arbor . Day, as suggested by the Hutt- Valley Horticultural' Society. Consideration will ;bo given to the reports of Messrs. Measori'arid Marchant, consulting engineers, on tho administration of the Hutt engineering-department, ,at a special meeting of the'Hutt Borough Council, to be held on Friday night. ■
