A NEW RECREATION GROUND.
PROJECT AT LYELL BAY Lack of recreation grounds has bceri a longstanding grievanco;in Welliri'gtori, but a-good deal . has been done of late years to remove the; reproach, and ity is now announced that the City Council has decided to form another recreation ground; ori ' a, site at 'Lyell Bay, which ground will bo reached per medium of tho new Lyell:Bay trarii. Certain negotiations between tho City Council and the Crawford Trustees,'aro, now almost settled, whereby, the ground-.in question will be .transferred to ijje city. The city has had various: dealings with the Crawford - Estate, and not ' very long ago, by; arrange'mont with Mr., H.. D. 'Crawford, the foreshore at Lyell Bay was secured to tho.;public for aII time, x : Mr. Crawford gavo tho city a block of. land,- about eight extent, and also a strip two chains an .width, in addition to 'a right-of-way; on condition 1 that the council constructed flib roadway and'ultimately connected . the "bay with-the tramway to Miraniar. Various other; transactions-were also entered iritoj and concluded, arid now that tho Lyell Bay tramway is a work for the immediate future, the 'city ,hai decided; to'einbark on the new recreation ground scheme on a block of eight acros of land on' tho new tram route, near tile Lyell Bay beitch. / .Roughly, the land in question is-.nbout twelve chains to the east \'of;the termination of Onepu Eoad- extension, and'abuts on the road -to be constructed "long the foreshore. As it stand's at,present, the site is covered with sandhills,; arid it is'-'recognised that it will cost- a good deal of-money .to level the area and transform it into a recreation, ground. The council is not' in'a positiou to take tho work in hand at onco and- push it straight' on to completiori, and tho, intention is; to spend as much money as is availablo'from'time'to time on the ground, arid so iii: the course of. a.few'years Jay out a; ground 'which" will. be a' valuable addition to the reserves of the• city, and which will bo suitable .for'football, ■ hockey, etc.,' when it is' fenced, levelled,3and planted.!';
