TRAVELLING ALLOWANCES
TO EDUCATION BOARDS. (By Tolcgra'ph.—Press .Association.) Nelson,, June 29. The Education Board had under consideration to-day a'lettor from tho Under-Secretary for Education stating that, in viow of the amount paid .in -,- travelling allowances to members, the Department would not be justified in .-.favourably considering any applications for special grants. A return showed that, for the'year ending December 31, 1908, the sum of £400 had been paid to members in this way, the allowance to one West Coast imembor being £116 10s. fid. and to another £93 17s. . . '■The chairman/(Mr. A. T. Maginnity) said that, in comparison with the amounts drawn by., other hoards, ' tho allowances were, nbsurdly.l large, but, as-'payment to mombors, they, were small. He thought that a reduction could bo made. A payment of sixpenco a milo one way and 10s. for tho second (lay of. tho meeting would cover out-of-imcket exThis would redtico the total to £19 "Os. fid.per meeting. ;■ Notice of motion was given for next meeting fixing the travelling allowance at actual out-oi-pccket expenses.
