' HUTT PIPE BRIDGE. In.'reference to the now Hutt pipe end traffic bridge, the following lottor was received r at last night's meeting of tho Petone Borough Council from Mr. J. H. Palmor, Wellington Town Clerk:—"Mr. William C. Watson has forwarded a letter to the Wellington City ', . Council, in which he states that tho eastern abutment and.the lino of the approach extends over a small strip of land, in all about one porch, insido tho stop bank at the now bridge at Petone. The city engineer was not aware, nor was there anything to indicate that any private property existed on 'the riverside of tho stop bank. Mr. Watson has, however, . produced his title and shown it to. the city \ solicitor, wherein it appears that he possess* ' ■ 1 this strip, , and has tho right of the river ; frontage, and'to pass .over'tho stop bank , with cattle, horses, etc. ■Mγ. Watson woe informed by. the city: solicitor that it will be necessary, for"tho.authorities constructing the new bridge to treat with hini regarding tho purchase of the. strip referred to. Tho approach to the bridge on the eastern side will also pass through his property; This was anticipated, but up to the present nothing hae been done with regard to acquiring the land for the purpose, Buch part of tho work being , entrusted to your council. I have,' therefore, to ask that your council will take immediate ' steps to.deal with Mr. Watson in connection with the strip required." . Tho Mayor moved: "That tho question be referred to the borough solicitor to ascertain'. the counoil's liability in respect ; thereto."
