It was a busy day. at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided. A few cyclists were fined 10s. arid costs for ■. riding without lights.. Matthew Johnson, BeardoD and Wright, H. P. Mortenson,; New Zealand Clothing -• Factory, A; M'Glashan,R. Thompson, and Roach Bros, (seven leading storekeepers) ware charged with failing to closo at .9 o'clock on Saturday,: June 5. For tho defence it was urged that 3 requisition had- been signed by ,the majority of. the shopkeepers, asking that, the hours bo extended. 'They were unaware "of. the fact; that" until gazetted the extension ..was not "legal. They., were fined .ss.'.,each'' . and costs.. James Brown was charged with supplying liquor to a Native.' Defendant was acarrier, and had livered the liquor unaware that- it was wrong to do so. .He was fined £1 arid £4 Is.. 6d. costs. A, large amount of' civil 1 business, was -also transacted. The magistrate also delivered reserved''judgment in Taylor v.' Slack, ar claim for £100 damages for! alleged illegal distress. Judgment -was'given for.plaintiff for, £20 and costs' (£4 lbs;). '-..■.
