PETONE HIGH SCHOOL.
TO, BE RECOMMENDED CONDITIONALLY The Education Board has decided to recommend to the Minister for Education that a high school proper bo established in Petone on certain oonditdons. At the board's meet-, ing yesterday, the sub-committeo, to which was referred the petition, of the Petono School Committee for. the establishment of a high school, recommended:— 1. Thai the Minister bo recommended to sanction the establishment of a,high school at Potono, under i Section . 94, of the ■ Educa-;' tion Act;-1908. • ' - - -' . ;-, -: ■ ..'. ■-, 2. That, if ■ this sanction bo . given, the board offers the present district high school building for the purposes of a'high school. Speaking in support of his motion for the adoption of tho committee's recommendation, Major T. W. M'Donaldsaid that tho simplest way. out was for the board to recommend to the Minister that Price's Building, tho location of the present district high school, bo offerod for tho, purposes of a .'high .school proper. : No expense would be incurred. VOr the board might, if'itsaw fit, reopinmbnd the addition of rooms to tho Technical' School building to the extent that the high school might bo accommodated there. That, .ho thought, was'the- better idea, ae'tho secondary education of the district would' be concontratod in tho one building. The chairman (Mr. Lee) had not attended the meeting of tho sub-committee, but ho felt : . sure. that its decisions would meet; with his approval. ; Mr. Lee: Not quite. 1 forgot all about tho meeting. ■ ? . .' ■ ■ Mr. W. fi. Fiold socondod the motion. Ho was : not forgetting tho claims of. the-Hutt VaUov as a whole;/but he, supported tho committee's recqmmendatkms as being a temporary arrangement that would, for the present, meet tho necessities of - Petone. ■Ho wished to make clear , tbd fact that he;rogarded the question as being ultimately one for. the whole of the valley, and thai tho future would necessitate the location.-of the high school proper in-another quarter. , ■ Mr. Lee: "Of. course, I, to a largo extent, agree with Mr. Field. It would bo better, to decide the question as for . the Hutt Valley.:. As, however, things have gone,so. far, Ido not see.any objection to the recommendations.s It would not take inucia to start the school on the lines suggested; But I can only' agree on the expressed condition thai the Hutt District High School will not bo affected. I would like that attached to thn recommendations." Continuing, the chairman expressed a preference for the idea suggested by Major M'Donald, that the high school -be established in classrooms built on to the Technical School. Price's Building wae a house, not a school, and unsuitable for tho'purpose..; It could be sold, and the cost ."of additions' to the,. Technical School, building could be.financed out of the proceeds. " . . " Tho recommendations, with Mr. Leo's pro-, viso attached, wore then adopted, and will be forwarded to the Minister for Education.
