Reid by 's'and 4, and A. Herd beat R. Thompson, the Scottish professional champion, by i hole., When Vardon and Reid met in the.'first round of tho Crudern Bay tournament the yonng Banstead Downs professional proved successful, but the ex-ehampjon has .now taken ample: vengeance for that reverse."- ■ J. H. Taylor won the first prize of £40 in, tho Cruden Bay tournament: He defeated James Braid, the open chaihpion, in the final by one hole. • ■ ' .. , ' . ' '• In the semi-final Taylor, showing brilliant form and doing 16 holes in 63 strokes, beat Duncan by 3 and 2. Braid, had to. meet W. E. Reid, the conqueror of Harry Vardon and Alexander Herd. Braid, too, played well; and won by 4 and 2. ' In the final tho golf was not so good a-s in'the earlier rounds; but t : ho> match was close, and it afforded plenty of excitement ,'to a orowd of over 1000 persons. The. champion was one'up with three to'play> but ho finished badly., ■ .„ .. .■ Tho annua! thirty-six holes stroke ic'ompetetion for the Tooting Beo Cup among members of t'ho Professional Golfers' Association Southern Section, was held ori '.May . 12. at Maidenhead. There was an entry of eightythree, including Rowland Jones, tho-holder, James Braid, tho champion, J. H. Taylors exchampion. Tho cup was won by J. G. Sherlock, tho Oxford University professional, with an aggregate score of 149. Sherlock is one of tho younger school of golfers, and last season readied the 1 semi-final ofthe Professional Golfers' Association £240 tournament,-- when he was defeated by J. H. Taylor. Braid's 71 in the morning beat the record for the course, held jointly by J. H.i Taylor and A. Simpson, by a stroke, and secured for the champion tho Maidenhead Club's special prize of five guineas for the best singlo round. • Tennis. ■ The competition for the amateur : tennis championship was brought to a conclusion at Queen's Club oij May 8, when in the final round Mr. Eustace Miles beat the Hon. N.,S. Lytton by three sots to love. The scoro was called 2 all ill the first set, but Mr. Miles, playing very effective tennis, won this and the next set with ease. Mr. Lytton made a good light in the third set, in whioh ho led at 5—4. Mr. Miles is now.nmateur champion for the eighth time, in cloven years. . ' \
