• A LADIES'. MEETING AT HASTINGS. < (By Tclceraph.-Specitil Correspondent.) Hastings, June 19. A very representative meeting of ladies was hold yesterday afternoon,, undar tlio auspices o'f tho National League of New Zealand. Mrs, J. A. Miller (Mayoress) presided, and was supported by Lady Russell and Mrs. Goring. There was a large attend-" ance. Mrs. Miller, after explaining the object of tho meeting,.asked Colonel Goring and Sir Wm. Russell to speak. Colonel Goring, in tho cotirso of his address,, emphasised the necessity for military training, and mentioned that there should bo a resorvb forco of men trained for servico in tho colony. Ho also -remarked. Uiat more riilei were, needed, and that ho considered Australia and New Zealand should make more ammunition of their own. At present ttio 0110 ammunition factory in Mow Zealand could' only ileal with a Certain amount, and if anything serious happened to tjvo machinery our supply might bo stopped for months. Sir, William Hnssell laid stress on the special benefits of military training, and moved that the ladies of Hastings express tho opinion that no system of defence can bo satisfactory unless, based on universal military training. Tlio motion was seconded by Mrs. J. H. Williams, and carried. Thirty" ladies handed in their names as noiy members.
