RE UNEMPLOYED AND SIR JOSEPH WARD.
■Sir,"-I think it's a matter of vital ance.to draw the head authorities' attention'to the state of tho unemployed throughout'-' the Dominion. Why all this-sillyinon-isonso-of bringing out immigrants from England, when the country is not in.a fit state to, encourage its own born and bred youths and middle-aged men to remain in the Dominion, instead, of looking-to Australia for employment? With all thistrouble upon tho people,'.we go and sack hundreds of Civil Servants to mako matters. worse Why, it is simply' outrageous'on the part of Sir J, Ward. It is not so much the matter of sacking Civil Servants, etc., as bringing out immigrants, who are of various occupations, when the Dominion's own children cannot obtain a-livelihood. •'•■'■' The encouragement of girls from England as ; domestio servants is-, not required., at all.' "There are plenty hero without importation. Mothers should keep their daughters at homo to,kelp;them, instead of hiring.servants, and allowing.)their daughters to. seek, .employment .in offioes, and thus taking the bread out of .the male clerk's month. Or there should, bo somo legislation brought in to put a step to tho employment of. girls in offices) and. thus doing away with tho importation of domestic servants, and helping the young man to occupy his rightful occupation. Then, above all,!to assist these immigrants at our expense. : ,Tke sooner Sir J. Ward's foolish and childish legislation. is done away; with and Mr.' Massoy recognised as at the head of affairs.the better. It seems a ~ ridiculous thing that Parliament should be prorogued for such a reckless financier as SjrJ. Ward. ..Ho is no doubt looking for honours while in London, on ac-count-of the Dreadnought'.gift. If ho is wise lie will refuse lany honour.: Has ho deducted .any of, his too- large: salary to assist theifinances of tho Dominionj for -which ho saclcedcso.many noor unfortunates recently? Thanking you, Mr, Editor, . for ■ valu'ablo space.—l am, etc, ;:-•:-.'•' .: S. MONRO. -.[ 'Palmerston -North, Juno 15. i .■ ' ■
