PETONE DRAINAGE. progress is being mado by tho borough engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) with the "tone eastern drainage. The fioor of the diachargo chamber from tho pmup has been laid in concrete, and tlio walls of tho pump level'have been built up to tho ground level. As, the, engineer is ablo to cope with the water by using the council's own pumping plant. he,kas returned the hired plant. The weather ??. permitted work to bo carried on without delay and, should it still keep favourable, the workmen will got out of the grassed land withm tlie next few weeks, and make a start in 'tho formed streets. For leaving a vehicle unattended in Victoria Avenue, a fine of Is., with costs 7s„ was imposed on R. Pointon. For trespassing on the railway line, E. Q. Pointon was fined 55., with costs 9s„ ana lor allowing a horse to trespass on the line H. Harley was fined 10s.; with 9s. costs. Simi- « £, „ gecl ' A - Colquhonn was fined IDs., with £1 3s. costs. ' A chargo of threatening behaviour was preferred against a youth named George Clutter, buck, who was defended by Mr. W. J. Cracroft Wilson. After evidonce, accused was convicted and discharged. - The borough inspector (Mr. W. B. Goueh» proceeded against G. Arnold for placing a quantity of bricks in Heretaunga Street without obtaining permission. A fine of ls„ with 10s. costs, was imposed.
JOTTINGS. ' M J- H. J- Palmer, of Petone, who has been conhncd to his room by the effects of an injury to his ankle sustained while watching a football match, is now ; ablo to* get about. The Hutt River rose' about two ' and a half feet yesterday, and is now very much disooloured as'a-result of the recent rains. A number of logs and other debris were-seen floating. down. The youths of Petone are a hardy lot. They simply swarm Jackson Street when school is out, and it is surprising that accidents are not of frequent, occurrence. Yesterday, a 'cyclist ran right over a little lad,'but the youngster rTOO Without the slightest injury, and ran awav smiling, Mr. A. Cowio returned to Petone last night from a visit to Nelson.
