PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council, held last night, was attended by the Mayor (Mr. J. V. M'Ewan), and CoudcUlotb U. J. Southgate,. J. Piper, W. Trumann, It. H.' Jones,' J.' W. List, K. W. Short, H. G. and Dr. Harding. With regard to assessing tho' amounts;to be paid by the varioas local. auiioritioa; in connection with the Hufct Lioensing Comniittoo expenses, the; clerk of the Hutt Couilty Coiincil pointed out that: bis council was liable lor'only one publican's license of £25 and twehre conditional for which fees amounting to £60 were paid. He asked, for a : correctoa statement when a cheque would be lonrarded. An amended return was forwarded by the clerk of the committee, Mr. A. H. Holmes, tho mistake hairing occurred in' Wellington. Tho matter was left in the hands of the clerk.
The Wellington Football Association, having been' challenged by Taranaki to contest the Brown Shield, applied to the Petono Bor Tl ough Council last' night for, permission ,to play the match on the Petono, Eocreation Ground. , THoir letter stated thai the match was to bo played on July 10. ' It was decided that the council first deduct the usual takinga, and that tho balance, bo equally divided between the association and ■ the council. ■'■ Tho Makara County Council's resolution regarding reckless driving by motorists was considered, and it was decided to support tho County Council in any action which it may take. ~- ■ ■ ■ ' . , Mr. J. jA. MacDohald, eeoretary, of the Heretaunga Boating Club, asked the council to again consider their application for - a lease of a portion of land on tho foreshore for 21 years. All that they desired was that the land already allocated to them, should bd .seenred, so tiat any future council could not deprive them of it. It was decided to grant the request. ' Mr. W. C. Cuff, clerk of Hutt Riyor Board, advksed the council, in connection with the erosion at the sanitary depot; that the protective works would in future safeguard the property. It came, out in discussion that delay in attending to the mattor wels owing to tho fact that the Government , owned a strip of land 100' feet from high water, and that whatever land disappeared, tbo Government's property remained: It was decided to oommunicato with tho member for the district, Mr. Wilford, asking him to rofer tho matter to the proper authorities.' The Public-Trustee informed fho conncil that the trustees of the Buick Estate declined to accept, tho council's • offer of £315 for a aito for a high echool. Councillor Xist moved that the , land bo taken undor tho Public Works Act, but the motion found no seconder. It was decided to set up n committee to investigate' the" best means of acquiring'tho section. ' .
