The senior games on Saturday wero productive of ; good and much-faster hockey than the previous week. Chief interest centred in the Karori-Y.M.C.A. ovent, which was played on No. 1 Ground, and was won by Karori after a very fast and evenly-contested game. By Karori's win the position of the leading teams is altered to YUI.C.A.' and United tie for top place.i with Karori one point behind. The boat leaving Wellington at 2.30 was a quarter of an hour late, and consequently the games -wero finished in semi-darkness. The ball was very hard.to sco for the : last ten minutes. Tho following ore the results:— •
i KARORI (8) V. Y.M.C.A. (5). From the whistle Karori forced the pace, their' vanguard being'fast and brilliant.' Getting, the ball from the Y.M.C.A:, they surged down.: the.-field, and Davies, taking <tlio ; ball within the circle, , shot the first goal for the Blacks. This performance was repeated en two occasions, within the next quarter of an hour. Then the Young Men livened up, A. Parton stopping a rush and transferring the ball to his brother, E. H. Parton, who managed to oyade the Karori goalkeeper. Eesiiming KaTori added two more to. their, score per medium of the aforesaid Davies pursuing the same tactics. Then Y.M.C.A. came again, and' the Partons worked their old dodge successfully, making the score read 4—2 in favonr of tho Blacks. The Blacks now eeemed to get Boing'like a piece'of well-oiled machinery,-and Willie and Elias added two more before halftinle ' was called; 6—2., Eesnming, Y.M.C.A. seemed determined-to even up, but their efforts were futilo until their centre-half-hack played back a little. Then.matters became interesting. Attack after at'ick was stopped by A. Parton, who, as soon, ".is he got the ball, sent it to his brother, who, running with it right into the circle, scored twice, in quick succession. Y.M.C.A. had hard luck on two occasions, Cardo-piloting the ball between the posts, .'.but being given off-side. Then Karori came again, and Fulton added two more ■to the ecoro by the help of Davies. The last score of tho day was the result of a hartl struggle in front of the Karori goal, E. E. Parton sending in a stinging shot and bearing the Black goalkeeper in the failing lieht. For the winners TDavies, Fulton, and Willis wsro prominent For the losers tho only prominent players were K. H. and.A. Parton, v/ith occasional flashes by; Loader. Mr., Southwick was referee.. . ■-, ' ■ . . , ! ■ UNITED (4) V.. WELLINGTON (1). ! United met Wellington on No. 3 Ground, and after an even gamo last year's champions were victorious by 4 goals to 1. Wellington early in the gamo made things interesting by. institu-ting-a fast rush, which was wily checked by United's, full-backs. United then put -Wellington/on • the defensive, 'and play, for some minutes' was in the Red's favour, although Wellington now: and then broke through but, goo 4 as their efforts were, they were driven baok by the solid defence.of their opponents, whose forwards were.not making'the most oi their, chances. 'Both . teams were, playing a keen game at this stags, and Wellington's defence was very. sure. , Organ, however, at last managed to get the only score in the first spell with a good shot. .' .... The second spell was opened with a fine attack- by. United, but Elliott's shot, was well saved'by the defending goalkeeper.; United haa' not: long to wait, however, for Elliott tooit command shortly after, aud sent in a good shot, which made tho tally:- United 2, Wellington nil.. Wellington, by careful play, worked down to United's quarter, but several shots; passed outside tho goal, .until, Walton managed to get the ball on the right side,-and made 'Wellington's .position look; a little'-'bet-. ter. United, however, gave their oppo'nents little chance after this, ahd although kept, out : by~good play,.Elliott registered.his 'second score from a difficult angle. B—l.. With only a few minutes till time, Hollis • managed to further add to. United's score, the game ending, 4—l. Mr.,Morpeth was the' referee.
VICTORIA COLLEGE (3) V. WESLEY (I).' Oh No. 2 ground vigorous play ensued between Victoria •..College; and 'Wesley. . ■■ 'College Aβ was the, against' United,, the Wesley seemed to be losing their hold of the game. As ■. was the case against. United, , the Blues scored first, Curgcnven'from a good pass putting the ball through.' Their'next attack was intti vith stubborn defence'. College took a trip to the.other end of the field, where Bogle 6poiled his ohances by being. off-side: The same player again got possession, arid this time claimed tho honour of restoring the balance. I—l. ■ A good run down the wing resulted in Boglo centring , to Beero; who lost,no time in putting College in the lead. 2—l. Wesley showed out better in.tho second spell, and, although unable to score themselves, kept College, froihi increasing their lead. The:pace in the first spell was by no means slow, but in the second it" increased very considerably, and was maintained right to the finish. Kibblewhite, right full-back for College, was in particularly good form, and was tho chief agent in keeping Wesley out. Beere stood out as the best forward on the ground. Mr. S. Hickson itas the referee. >•. .
VIVIAN (2) V..THORNDON (0). A close game took place on No. 5 ground between.- Vivian and Thorndon.
