NOTES AND COMMENTS.
i ;rß7, : Gt«ncoi.i ,Tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's mooting takes plainest Wednesday and Thursday. Of the twelve horses entered for tho Hawke's, Bay Steeplechase, ouly five have made- tho acceptance. Theso include three of this season's steeplechase winners, viz., Eurus, Capitol, and Jackpot W , .* Clark arrives from Lyttelton this morning with Eurua and Northern Star. Tho horses will bo shipped aboard the mail train as far as Palmorston North, so that they may got through to Hastings to-night. Northern Star is among tho acceptors for the Hack Steeplechase, to bo decided on the first day of tho Hawko's Bay meeting. Ho has been jumping well at Ricoarton Bince going homo from tho Wanganui meeting. Melbourne trainer D. J. Price is said to have purchased a three-year-old full-brother to' Pink 'Un. The horse is to be brought down from Gisborno by tho Flora next week, and will be shipped later to Melbourne. A pony by Jet d'Eau from Thame (Sir Tristram s dam) will probably be among tho competitors at Miramar when the new season opens. The principal winning owner at tbo Auckland Racing Club'a winter meeting was Mr. J. ' Twohill, owner of Capitol, who annexed £650 in stakes. Mr. J. Nelson, owner,of Bully, and 'Mr. R. G. Wallace, owner of' Ngapuka, each won £500. Returned visitors from EUerslie havo a good word to say for the brown gelding Turbine, by Mcnschikoff, who is possessed of a lot of pace for five furlongs. Menschikoff's stock were very prominent at the Auckland meeting, Michaeloff, Coromandel, and Turbine crediting the Stepniak sire with winning brackete. Mr. A. F. Douglas, owner of Waipu, and J. O'Connell, who is to ride Waipu, leave for Australia at "tho conclusion of the Napier Park meeting. Mr. Douglas thinks that both Kiatere and Waipu have been allotted satisfactory weights in their Australian engagements, and, as both horses showed good form at Auckland, they only require a good passage across to give them every chance of acquitting themselves creditably. Tho old St. Leger golding, Scotty, showed great form at' tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting, and, -as bo can scarcely bo thoroughly wound up just yet, it seems certain that he will be a winner before the season closos. Considering the number of years ho has been on tho racing track, Scotty is a wonder for retaining his pace. Red M'Gregor, who competed in cteeplechase evonts at tho Auckland meeting, is a full-brother to the Great Northern steeplechase winner, Capitol. After the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslio on Wednesday the stewards held an inquiry into the running of Reservoir as compared with his form" on the first two days of the meeting. ' The owner's explanation was accepted as , satisfactory. An inquiry was also held into the 'runningof Bully, who finished last jn.tho Campbell Hurdles, as his form did not appear to agree with his win in the Great Northern Hurdles. Tho explanation tendered, however, was considered satisfactory. Andax; who went wrong prior to the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting, is said to bo now fully recovered, and will probably be seen competing'at the Trentham and Riecarton, meetings. Though Le Beau won events at tho Auckland meeting, and ran second in ■ tho big steeplechase,. it is consiuored that he is still capable of improvement, ancPViirbeVmorig''the'fancied candidates for future big events during the winter. Paritutu's breakdown at Ellerslio is re- ' portedito be serious,»and it may be that tho bay ,son of Castor has soon tho last of tho racing track. The annual meeting of tho Riccarton .lrainers Association was hold recently, Mr. H. E. Cutts presiding over a large attendance of members. Tho annual report stated that the membership numbered thirtyu^?. - , 01-01100, was ,nac lo to tho matters which had been considered by the committee during tho past year. The balance-sheet snowed that tho year closed with a credit i . j 23- , The folI <"™8 committee was elected:—Messrs. A. Cutts, G. MurravAynsley, W. M'Donald, D. Roberts, H. Thomson, P. M'Grath, and R.' Derrett. Special mention was made of the work of the secretary (Mr. A. Cutts) since the association was formed, and a presentation was mado to him m recognition of his services, PONY AND GALLOWAY RACINC CLUB.' JULY MEETING.' As indicated in yesterday's isaue, tho Wei lington Pony and Galloway Racing Club has decided to hold a mooting next month, and the date selected is July 22, the Thursday following the second day's racing at Trentham.
