The report states:- During the year the share issue offered not having been fullv subscribed, 1760 debentures of .£25 each, bearing interest it tho rate of 6 per cent, per annum, were created. u» ls J n< >"; has ',P«awy all been- taken up, chiefly by shareholders. The funds now available are snßciont to complete and equip the mine, and to leave a margin for commencing business. The works are practically completed, the line, of communication brinf established from Soldier's Creek to the terminus'of the Government branch railway at Blackball. The fan and main brake'are «rected, and all the other machinery and plant is to baud, either complete or. in precess of being completed. The storipv bins are well in hand. A new eeam-of .Bft.-of anthracitous coal, similar in analysis to the other anthracitous sonms, .Iras intersected in the main tunnel in March last. The company now has three eesms, Nos. 1, 2, and.3, about Sft.i Hit., and lift, thick respectively, available for working. It is .intended to begin operations on No. 1, the lowest seam. Tho coal proves to be of exceptional quality for coke-making, and at a futura date, when our coal-mining business is. established, it will be desirable to undertake the mannf»cture of coke.' The mine manager states:—"For steam production, household and smithy purposes, the coal has no equal in New Zealand, and once on the market will soon establish a reputation for itself.: berlast, a six-ton sample from No. 3 seam was sent, on my recommendation, to the Broken Hill Proprietary Bellambi coko works for a'.test.of the coking qualities, and tho result proved that it will make a coke equal to any in the world.
, "Tho absence of the Government branch railway, the completion of which was expected in 1907,' has been, n groat disadvantage, and has entailed a , very heavy additional outlay. It is now promised at an early dato. Shareholders are reminded that the scope of tho works proposed in-, the .'prospectus was greatly enlarged, as indicated, in the 1007 report,-'and instead of carrying out tho main tunnel to intersect only ;> the' lowest seam, it has- been pushed thronjih. to Soldier's, Creek to command the whole field. ..The three lowest seams.have been opened out, and facilities are also, gained for readily opening and working the bituminous ssams when necessary."
