KILLED, 330, DEVASTATION IN SUMATRA. (BT TEtiKGRAPE—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPIItIQHT,) Batavia, June 10. ;- An earthquake, accompanied by a great seismic wave, has caused groat. damage in Sumatra, in. tho Dutch East Indies. ' ; Three hundred and thirty persons wero killed and many injured. VOLCANIC ACTIVITY. An. imposing mountain-system, consisting of several nearly parallel (7000 to 10,000 feet high), with' intervening plateaux and valleys, forms the framework of the island of Sumatra, which has a bold and frequently precipitous coast towards the west. Seven or eight volcanoes are still active, including Indrapura (tho culminating peak of the island; 11,800 feet), Merapi (the most restless), Pasaman pr Jlount Ophir (which broke out in 1891). ' Sumatra is, after Borneo, tho largest island of 'tho East Indian Archipelago or Indonesia, having an area not much less than that of Spain, calculated at 165,600 square miles. Towards tho middle it is crossed lengthwise' by the equator j tho greatest length is 1115 miles, tho greatest breadth 275.
