MOTES AND COMMENTS. fB7 GI.ISCOIS.I The Auckland Racing Club's meeting will be concluded at Ellerslie this afternoon. Artillene is again in work at Randwick, and is said to be looking .particularly, well after her brief respite from racing.
• As Phaetontis lias not shown any form for nearly two years now, , the handicappors 011 the other side are beginning to let him down in the weight, and ho was recently dropped 71b. for running unplaced. Jackpot,, who performed disappointingly in his Ellerslio engagements* was railed home to Hastings on Monday. ■ .
Miehaoloff, who won tho Eanfurly Handicap at the Auckland meeting on Saturday, is a half-brother to the steeplechaser Kiatere.
The track at Randwick is very fast this season, and several new records have been established. Early in the spring, Perkeo put up a. new record for nine furlongs,' and, at the recent autumn meeting new records were established for seven furlongs, one mile, and one mile and three furlongs.' Saveral other records were equalled. On Monday, at Randwick, Beau Vive, established a fresh rccord for one mile and three furlongs, running the distance in 2min. 19scc. This is only 1 2-ssec. outside the world's record.
The fact that Audas has been scratched for the ■ Hawke's Bay steeplechase probably means that the Birkenhead gelding has not yet recovered from , the strain . which .prevented his starting at the Wanganui meeting.
In tho hack hurfite rate at Elleralio on Saturday, Wfiikato was racing second to Cymri at the last hurdle, but.he came down ■and brought down Carlylo. This enabled the favourite Leo to, run into .second place.
Starboard has been second on nearly half a dozen occasions recently, and it seems as
if the Taranaki horse is never going to win. Ho is engaged in the Fitzroy ,\Veltor at Ellerslio this afternoon', but, as there is likely to be a field of twenty for this event, ho would want to bo at his very best to wm.
' According to the latest English files, Mr. Lloyd-Georgo will shortly be asked in , the House of Commons if he is awaro of tho revenue that might be secured to tbo country, by the Government taking for national purposes one half of the gate-money received at all cricket, hockey, football, and horse and dog-racirig meetings, and if he will tako the necessary steps to consider the. matter.
Last year the • Winter Steeplechase at' Ellorslie attracted eight starters, but, in today's contest, there will bo only half that number competing. They are all good performers, however, and a good race should result, Sol is stated to havo_ been' going particularly well, when he fell in the Great Northern, and Irish and Le Beau are expected to be a match for Capitol over the shorter distance. Last season Sol was very unlucky at the Great Northern meeting, for, after running second to Waipu in the Great Northern Hurdles, he also acted as runnerup in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and in. the Winter Steeolechase. Irish, too, has been unlucky it Ellerslie, for, since winning the Great Northern Hurdles in 1905; ho has twice filled second place in that event. None of tho acceptors in the Tamalri Steeplechase' have snown any great ability i over big country yet, but -Te Araij who has already, won four, hurdle races this season,
is said, to have jumped the big fonces well in his schooling tasks.. To Kainui started in the same race last year, but failed to get' round. •
