m ■ ; ■ Auckland, Jnno 3. Tho fishing season at Rotorua, which has now concluded, may be raid, to have been equal to any of its predecessors. No attempt was made this season to keep an accurate account of the actual quantity ' of trout taken from the lakes and streams around llotorua as had been done in tho past, but those in a position to know by past experience state that tho catch for tho 1908-1909 season was' quite equal to that of tho season 1907-1908, which was over 70 tons. The Tourist Department is now engaged in foncing off the streams with a view to weeding out all fish that may be considered of a weakly nature, so that next season tho fish 6hould bo in the pink of condition.
An Auckland bookseller stated to a reporter yesterday that tho demand for American fiotion, which for a timo seriously interfered with tho sale of English novels, is now falling off. Ho attribute! tho popularity of American works a good deal to tho attractive manner in which they were prepared for the market by American publishers. This had roused British publishers to action, and when they seriously set thorn? selves to it, the bookseller remarked, British firms .could-produce hotter work than tho Americans.
