So fro quontly are demands made that, when an la stitution decides to raise funds, on indirect method—and a taking one at that—must needs be chosen. Therein lies tho general succeed ol bazaars, and tho Petono-Brass Band, desiring new uniforms, has organised a huge mart, and with it tho means, indigenous to all bazaars, of gitting rid of tho Wares. But the Drill Hall has not been converted into an emporium simply, fort the stalls of goods are backed by sideshows and secret chambers of. the approved order. These aro splendid sourccs of mcomo, for tho enchanted swing must appeal'to youth, bid folks and young tako kindly to. electrio shocks, and one and all may be expected to subsidise tho new game of parlour pool. In recognition of past services of tho Brass Bandj whose members have been willing at ill times to assist musically at local functions, the numerous organisations of the town are lending substantial lielp. Ladies of the Foresters' Lodge have a stall, and other booths- hare boon stocked by tho Petono Navals, the Potone Bowing Club, and tho Petono Junior Club. Tho Fire Brigade has charge of tho art gallery, and delicate hands have arranged- the ferns which adorn the tearooms—another profit ablo department. Tho bazaar was opened by Mr. T. M. Wilfcrd, M.P,, and the hall was crowded. Prior,to the opening a fancy-dress procession through the streets was headed by the Wellington Garrison Band under Lieutenant Herd, This gathered a throng from all parts of the town, and goodhumoured jostling was unavoidable at the doors. At intervals business was allowed " to, slacken for a song, a comic item, or a; stepdance. The Gan'ison Band played a couplo. of selections. Later in .the evening reports of a satisfactory nature came in, from all sections. This afternoon 1 snecial concessions aro announced for the children, and a holiday programme will be submitted to-night,' the Petone Citizens Band assisting." ■ The services of Newtown Band and,the Pipe Band havo been promised for to-morrow and Saturday respectively.
DANGEROUS STREETS. In framing the ' estimates for the ■ coming year, the council of Petono-Borough will, doubtless Bet apart a Burn tor the improvement ol the sido ; Btrcots. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), in his election address, intimated that it was his intention to give somo thought to the streets of. the town. He stated that h« hoped .to have all side,streets graded, and' then tarred and sanded, so as to bring thein into tho same condition as Jackson Street. No ono will say; that the work is unnecessary—p.t least no motorist, driver, or cyclist. In a tew streets the surface has been worn down to such"" an extent that tho wooden frames enclosing tho fire plugs stand up several inches, and are dangerous obstacles both for the' cyclist 'and " for the drive.- of. a vehicle. Denby; P.C.T,; was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of.members. Sister Walters was initiated, and two candidates' were nominated' for membership. A pleasant social evening was spent . . : ' MASTEB.TON VISITORS. Members of St. ifligustino's Yonng Men't Bible Class met in the parish hall last evening to welcome some thirty lads of St. Matthew's.Church, Masterton. The Rev. W. Raim • who accompanies tho visitors, expressed his.oppreoiation of the hearty welcome accorded "hu boys by the Rev. J. D. Russell (vicar), and a pleasant social evening was spent. ; The local young men will'engage their guests, at hockey and football matches to-day on Petone Recreation Ground.
