CITY COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night, when there were present: The Mayor (Dr. A. K. Newman), and. Councillors Luke, Smith,. Cohen, Ballinger, Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Devino, Fitzgerald, Carraichael, Hindmarsh, M'Laron, Shirtcliffo, Fletcher, and Morrah. The Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended that the'council re-enter into possession of a section of Town Belt, the lesseo of which is very much in arrears with his rent, and that fclio rent arrears bo sued for. That' the application of • the Officer ■Commanding the Permanent Artillery to drill the force on the Basin Reservo on Tuesday and Friday mornings bo not granted. That the application of the Wellington, Lacrosse Association for permission to make a chargo for admission to tho Basin Roservo on Saturday, July 10, on tho occasion of a match with Auckland, bo not granted. That - tho Wellington Benevolent Institution be granted a renewal of their lease of Section 45, Town Belt, from August 15, 1008, to August 15, 1909, at a rental of £4 per annum. Tho committee reported that tJiby- havo instructed- the superintendent of- reserves to proceed with the work of improving tho northern 1 portion of the Kent Terrace Preserve. In regard to the application of the Lacrosse Association, it was . stated that the Cricket Association, which had spent a great deal on tho grounds, had been permitted -to charge on only a very few days "of the year. TJioro were only ten days om which a charge could be made, and 'they were 'all • provided for. . , The By-Laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee recommondedTllat three now lamps bo crccted in Majoribanks Street, King Street, and Fitzherbert Terrace. That tho city solicitor bo instructed to tak« tho necessary action to compel the removal of somo_ temporary wooden buildings and offices in Aitken- Stroet. That the city solicitor bo instructed to write to tho Harbour Board for payment of tho sum of £25 per annum (such sum having been agreed upon by tho council and the board on February 11, 1890, for the use of the brigade's services) to the present date, and that the present agreement with tho board's engino be terminated by three notice from November 1,1909. That a permit bo issued for ' the alterations to Messrs. J. Qodbor and Company's promises at Lambton Quay, and that tho contractor for the work bo proceeded against' for commencing tho work without first obtaining his permit. That from Juno 1, the Government bo charged the usual fee (£2'2s. per alarm) for the four firo alaims connected to the Firo Station. That they havo received a reply from tho Minister for Internal Affairs intimating that, except as providod by tho Fare Brigades Act, 1908, there is no appropriation out of which an annual subsidy could be paid towards tho upkeep of the Fire Brigades. The report was adopted, with the exception of the clause referring to tho Harbour Board whjoh was Referred back to tho committee. Other reports wcro held over ,for future' consideration, tho Mayor ruling that t-hov came 'Under the definition "new business " and oould not bo taken after 10.30, unless permission was given by the couricil prior to that hour. . The -remainder of tho reports were held over until next meeting.
