[General Sir lan Hamilton, K.C.8..D.5.0., was born at Corfu, January 16, 1853, and is the son of Colonel C. Hamilton. He was educated at Cheam and Wellington Collego, entered the Army in 187*2, and served in the Afghan War, tho 1881 campaign in South Africa, tho Egyptian and Sudan campaigns, in Burma, Chitral, and Tirah. At, the beginninK of thoßoor War he distinguished himself at Elandslnarrto and Lad.vsmith, and served under Lord Roberts in the advance upon Johannesburg. Ho returned to England in January,. 1901, to become • Military Secretary, to Lord Roberts, and on November 0 went out again -as Chief of Staff to Lord Kitchener. On April 23, 1903, ho was appointed Quarter-master-General. Ho was sent to Manchuria in 1904 to represent the Indian A'rmyin the war, and commanded the- Southern Military. District, 1005-8. He has the First Class of the Order of tho Prussian Crown, the Red Eagle, tho Spanish Order of Military Merit, and tho Grand Cordon of tho Saorcd Treasure (Japdn).]
