Auckland, June 1. , When tho first application for a license came before the Auckland City Licensing Committee to-day, tho chairman, Mr. Outton, S.M., said tho committee had dectued to hear all the applications for licenses, and then decide whioh Bhould be.renewed, after hearing all the evidence. ' i Mr. 0. Nicholson, solicitor for several licensees, said that meant calling'evidence in the case of every hotel. The practice hitherto in districts where reduction had boon carried Was for the Bench to intimate tho number of houses it proposed to close, and also those to which it was prepared to grant renewal. ■ . Mr. Cutten said the committee bad reports of the police on accommodation and tho conduct of hotels; If licensees were not proSared to accept these, thoy could call ovl-" ehoe. ■ ' .., ' '- .. Mr. Nicholson pointed ont that one licensee, feeling ,sure of renewal, might not call evidence, but another less favourably situated might, with the result that "the latter might secure renewal. Tho committee after a great deal of discussion decided to require tho owners of the following fourteen hotels to bring evidence to show cause why their licenses should be renewed :—Railway, Terminus, Star Hotel . (Newton), Aurora, Bricklayers' Arms, Britomart, Fitaroy, Grosvenor, King's Arms, Newton, Park, Queen, Queen's' Head, Suffolk, and Thistle. The committee will meet again on Friday to take evidence. ■In tho meantime the committee has decided "to hold over all applications for licenses.'; ' RENEWAL OF THREE LICENSES ' \ . , .
