_- —> .. . ■..... A BLAZE AT LEVIN. ' Our Levin dorrespondent state* that a serious firo broke oat on Tuesday morning shortly after 4 o'clock-in the dwelling-house occupied by Mr. J. V. Bowleg manager for tho Butt Moat Company. Tho house » situated at tho rear of tho company's shop in Oxford Street, Levin, two doors from the post office. The Firo Brigado was quickly on the scono, and, under Captain R. J. Jones, n-ero soon directing a tjleiitifal sUppty of water on tho premises. Willing hands worked tho manual firo engine, and after a tough battlo for an hour and a half they succeeded iff extinguishing theflamo3. The Adjoining shops of On Tie, froileror, ond Mr. Walkley, drftpor, wore in 1 considerable danfor for somo time, but tho admirable manner in Whioh tho brigade was handled Baved them from becoming involved. Tho house and furniture were completely destroyed, and the meat in the shop badly damaged by smoke and water. The stocks of On Ttoftrfd H. AValkloy were ftko damaged considerably by tho omoko. Had a strong northerly been blowing nothing could have saved the entire row from the post Office to .the Arcadia Hotel. ' By a fire at Waverley last night the Com- ' mercial Hotel, a building containing thirty or forty rooms, was completely gutted, and the Clarendon Hotel partially destroyed. Tho firo originated in the kitchen of the Commercial Hotel. Tho fire brigade, who haVd no high-preosuro water supply, had great difficulty in preventing the spread of tho fire. The damage to the Clarendon, occupied byMr. OaTccnfull, is estimated at several hundred pounds. . The insurances are; Commercial, building £000, stock £300, furniture £700, in the Atlas office; Clarendon, building £1025, and furniture and stock £875, in tho Atlas. -The inmates of tho CoirtEcroial Hotel lost neaily all thoir belongings, escaping in their night clothes only. Tjie lire brigado was called out at 7.2£ this morning to a fire in a four-roomed cottage in Dnndas Street, owned by Samson and Co., and occupied hy Mrs. Robertson. Tho occupier had riot been in the house for some days. Throb rooms were badly damaged before tho outbreak was quelled'. This iafternoon, Frederick Charles Lacoy was nrfested on a chargo of wilfully sotting fire to the house.
