THE NEW PLY MOUTH-ON KUTTNG A SERVICE. COipLAINTS FROM NEW. PLYMOUTH. "Bitter complaints are-being made," says the Taranaki "Herald," "by the trading community on account of the unsatisfactory nature of the flteamer services between New Plymouth and : Wellington and-. Auckland, and it must be ad* mitted that there is good-reason for them; For a considerable time past the cargo service be* tween .Wellington and the breakwater has been defootive, mainly on .account of the Eotoiti declining to take cargo for this port,- because, we beliove, all her available spaee was required for chaff from Picton to Onehunea. Now the Rotoiti has been taken off altogether, and the Rosapond is to bo pa t on to make a weekly trip from Wellington, via Picton and. Neteon. In the meantime we have been some ten days without a Cargo steamer from Wellington. When the Eosamond is put on—she is supposed to leave Wolhngton to-day on her first trip i£ tho new service—it will take four days to get cargo from Wellington,' for she is not timed to arrive here until Tuesday, sq that. importers jlll frequently find themselves inconvenienced by delay in ; the • arrival of transhipped goods. On the run to. Onehung.v we have been hitnerto so well sorvod with a daily steamer both ways that the present muddle is, most irritating, by comparison. There has been no steamer to : Onehunga since, Monday last, and apparently there will bo none to-night, owing to % »ishap to the Barawa, and there has been no stearaer from Onehunga since Tuesday morning, when the Rotoiti made her final-trip on this' run. The result is serious lons and ineomvenieace to the trading community. This nort kas served i JJo shipping companies very well, «a 4 enabled them for years past .to reap % rich harvest from the passenger traffio. . This being" in a very large measure diverted to the railway, the companies have curtailed-the,services to a n unwarrantable' degrees No ono emecta them to F/H 1 a Mr steamers at a loss, but we -are entitled to a regular service, and if this cannot he given by tho companies now . trading in the route .it will. be time for a'local company to no formed to enter, into it. The present position is almost intolerable.' 1.
In connection with tho above, it may be menhoned that, 'at very short notice, tho Union Company dispatched the Takapuna from Wellington to Now Plymouth to' run between that port and Oaehunga. . TelegrapMo advice received states that she arrived at Now Plymouth on Saturday evening, and, after a short slay, proceeded to Ouehnnga, which port she left again on.Sunday.for. New Plymouth, whore she connected with tha express yesterday morning. The Rosamond left Wellington yesterday at 4.15 p.m. on her initial run in tlie new cargo service, which was reported some days ago.
