NOTES AND COMMENTS. '

fßr Qlescok.l The Great, Northern Hurdles will be run on Thursday next. A Press Association telegram from Hastings states that Te Kohau was omitted from tho telegraphed nominations for tho Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Next Thursday's pony meoting at Miramar will commence at 1 p.m., and not 1.46 p.m., as stated in an advertisement in Saturday's isBUO. ■ The Birkenhead gelding, Somateria, broke down badly when competing at- tie North Otago Jockey Club's meoting last week. Twenty-eight entries havo been received for the hack hurdle races at tho Hawko's Bay Jookoy Cluib's' meeting. Seaman, who has been off tho track for several months, will be among the competitors at Otaki this week. Tho Sylvia Park gelding has not long recovered from an attack of influenza, and may not bo seen at his best just yet. Peroia, who won the Oaks at Epsom on Friday last, oomos of the samq family as tho Now Zealand horse Bobrikoff. _ Lord Soult has not accepted for tho Rangiuru Handicap at Otaki: so it would .-©jpear that the Foxtail horso is not forward I "Wifl to isae at present.

North Head and Maidi are tho moßt notable defections from tho Great Northern Huxdlo race. Weights for the first day's events at the Hawke 9 Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting will be declared on Monday next. Owners shouldi note that nominations for the New Zealand Cup, of 2000 sovs.. close at 0 p.m. to-morrow (Tuesday) with tno secretary of tho Canterbury Jockey Clnb, Christchurch.. r . \ , Staybpy claims two engagements at Ellorsi'i° V* urs d a y> the Cornwall Handicap and tiro Maiden Hurdles. In all probability lie will contest tho latter event, m which tho opposition is weak. amon 6 tho acceptors for tho llaukawa Cun at Otaki, nor has ho been entered at'tho Hawke's I3ay winter meeting. > Evidently' the son of San Fran is to ?«? ?! ve H.I! le ? fc y of time to, get over tho which ho developed after iiis raco in tho Hawke's Bay Cup. .. .On Blenheim running it is argtied that 1 winkle cannot stay beyond five furlongs. This argument will be tested at the. Otaki meeting, as the hay gelding is entered in a seven furlongs race. The most remarkable feature of this year's Two Thousand Guineas and Derby,is the fact that Bayardo, who was unbeaten as a two-year-old, did not figure among tho placegetters. In March lie met with a slight accident, and this, besides interfering with his preparation, may have caused his/withdrawal from hoth_ events. His last reason's form was so brilliant that, in some quarters, it was predicted that ho would win tho Two Thousand, Derby, and St. Leger.
