' Additional plant will be required to enable the gasworks to copo with tho increased demand, and this was mentioned at tho meeting by Councillor Harding.; ■ Ho remarked that »j a considerable time had been allowed to elapse- since the offer was first submitted to the Hutt Council, it would be advisable to make provision in the' agreement for the time required in installing tbo extra machinery. The.Potone Council would have to bo safeguarded. .. : , . . THE MAIL TRAIN. ' •,\ Minor alterations in tho time-table of suburban trains have been petitioned for repeatedly, and just as'ofton refused by 'theDepartment,. Tho reason has been given that any change in the present compressed timotablowould throw out the whole of tho succeeding trains and necessitate a complete readjustment. 'Petone Borough Council is not impressed with this'argument so far as tho morning north-bound mail train is- concerned, and another effort is being made to ensure that the Napier express stop 3 to pick up passengers at Petone station. Councillor R. J: Sou%ate tabled a motion at this woek 9 council meeting urging that a strong deputation of councillors ; and other citizens should wait upon the Minister for Railways (Hon. J. A. Millar) and submit'their view of things. The council agreed that tho suggestion was a good one," and decided to ask the' momberfor tho district (Mr. T. M. Wilford) to introduce the, deputation. - . . Hutt. Acoussd, an ox-inmate of Ohiro Homo, was stated to be a nuisance- to the Belmont people. So great has been tho traffio over the. Hutt Eoad during the past few months, consequent upon tho commencement of carting operations in connection with the railway duplication, that, the surface now assumes tho appcaranco of a river of mud after a fow showers have fallen. _ Tho inconvenience.and discomfort are considerable, for this is one of the chief artorial roads in the Wellington , province, and is in constant uso by carriers of Lowor Hutt and Pctono. It is shunned by the man iii the motor-car, and cyclists regard it ns an impassablo route. Tho exceptionally good sheep season is now almost closed, and tho number of carcasses going through the Gear Company's-works and those at Ngahauranga is daily dwindling During tho past fow weeks several of, the slaughtermen have taken their departure for' "up-country" and Australia, in searoh of more steady employment.
