At the quarterly meeting of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Joosteu (German Consul) criticised tho proposal to pay tho cost of a Dreadnought by a surcharge on European and colonial importaN tions Ho felt that such a motion was directed against Germany, whilo tho United btatos, which exported largely to New Zealand was. left out. If it was directed against Germany it also meant penalising our ally France Ho opposed Germany being penalised, as there appeared to be an oxoollont opportunity of German markots beine thrown open to Now Zealand frozen meat. Ho hoped that tho Government would ignore Mo resolution as it deserved to bo ignored The charrman (Mr H . J MarS) said ttafc he did not know that tho resolution w M directed specially against Germany, but it was carrying out tho prinoiple of preference to the 'Mother Country,
