HARBOUR BOARD.

O _ MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the 'Wellington Harbour Board yesterday afternoon was attended by Mr. T.M. Wilford, M.P. (chairman), Dr. A. K. Newman, Messrs. F. H Fraser, R. Fletcher, M. Cohen, C. E. Danioll, J. W. M'Ewan, J. G. Harkness, and F.' G. Bolton. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. C. W. Jones. THE MAYOR TAKES HIS SEAT. The chairman read the town clerk's notification of tho election of Dr. A. K: Newman as Mayor of Wellington. In welcoming Dr. Newman to his nlace at, the table, as an oxofficio member, ,the ohairman said it had been the custom in tho past for the City Council and tho Harbour Board to work together for the progress of tho port, and ho had no doubt that this would be done in the future with Dr. Newman aB tho city's representative on the board. Dr. Nowman thanked the chairman for his welcome, and said it would be bis object as Mayor to work harmoniously with the board for the advancement of the city and port. . FINANCE. Tho following credit balances at the bank were reported :—Current account, £26,784 14s. Id.; imprest account, £970 14s. 6d.; on fixed deposit, £70,000. The board authorised the following payments :—Accounts and wageß, £10,309 16s. 6d.; progress payments on contracts, £2150 14s. 5d.; salaries for May, £886 6s. 5d.; total, £13,346 17s. 4d. The chairman reported: "That the tender of Messrs. W. Cable and Company for tho sum of £1575,-, being tho lowest and in. order, had been accepted for contract No.. 156 for two hydraulic woolpresses with Messrs. T. C. Jenkins and W. G. Duthio as sureties." It was, resolved that the seal of the 003 rd bo affixed ( to the agreement of contract. WHARVES AND ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE; The wharves and accounts committee recommended the board:—(l) To redeposit tho sum of £8000 maturing, Mav 31,' with the National Bank of New Zeajand for two years; (2) to call for tenders for annual supply of uniforms, to close at 2.15 p.m., on Juno 24; (3) to affix seal to agreement between board and engineer, Mr, James Marchbanks; (4) to affix seal to appointment of Mr. W. .11. Muir, as board's valuor, in connection with valuation of leaso of-Feathorston-Street endowment. : PETONE,RECLAMATION SCHEME. Tho Petone Borough Council wrote asking '° r a report dn tho scheme for reclaiming part of the foreshore, at Petono., The chairman stated that last year he asked j the. engineer, to report on thtf matter, but he had not yet had time to do so. ..-:•' A BUOY AT THE SLIP. '■ „ The Wellington Patent Slip Company, Ltd.. wrote seeking approval of tho substitution of a buoy anchor in place of the dolphin' at tho slip. .-....-.., Tho chairman. said the harbourmaster had informed him that there was no objection to Jiis proposal. The dolphin was badly damaged, and a buoy with mushroom anchors had.been procured already to tako its place. The board decided,to accede to the request. IN COMMITTEE. *"'■ Tho board in committeo resolved:— "That the question of interharbour wharfage on goods and charges,on harbour ferry steamers bo referred to the Wharves and accounts Committee." ' '/That the engineer, consnlt tho harbonr. master in regard to tho leading light at the Bona Bay Wharf, with a view to making the samo more effective than • it is at present." ■'..:■ : '.; * The question of tho charges on hemp and tow was also gone into in committee, and tho viows of the producers wero set forth by Mr. Cohen! The Wharves and Accounts Committee was directed to consider the matter and report to tho board. ■■'■' THE LATE FIRE. ; -The chairman reported that he. and-Mr. Harkness, who had been appointed a committee for the purpose, had come to a compromise, which they_ considered a fair one, in regard to the claims of the fire insurance companies, which wero affected by the fire which destroyed the J Shed. ''.'.'■ WHARF LIGHTING. _Mr. Fletcher again brought up tho subject of lighting the wharves, and at his suggestion, the secretary was instructed to request the City Electrical Department and the secretary of the Gas Company, who have already been asked for information, to funilsht same, if 'possiblo, before the next meeting of the board. . . /
