At the Supremo Court, Rohert Carr, found guilty at last session of shooting Captain Mewott, at Dargavillo, and in whoso favour a point was reserved for the Court of Appeal, vias to-day sontenced to two years' imprisonment with hard_ labour. Mr. Justico Edwards said tho crime was a particularly shocking one, as accused had deliberately shot at a man who had saved his life when that man was trying to prevent two men from quarrelling. His Honour'declined to accept over-indulgence in liquor as an oxcueo, FREE SCHOOL BOOKS: '~ Auckland, May 26. At a mooting of the Board of. Education a letter was road, stating that as tho board had not complied with the conditions issued in October, and did not propose to do so, it would hot bo possible to pay the Government grant for free school books this year. The chairman said the grant was insufficient in tihe first place to cover the cost of books required, and the board had delayed action ponding an inquiry. Now thoy were evidently not to receive tho grant at all. Such action did not tend to increase confidence in the bona fides of tho Government. Tho board would not snffor, but the parents and children would. The Department's communication was formally acknowledged. CONDITIONAL LICENSES. . , , Dunedln, May 26. At a meeting of the Taieri Licensing Committee it was decided not to issue any conditional licenses for tho present. This means that next week's winter mooting at Wingatui will bo held without tho sale of liquor. LIBEL IN BUSINESS LETTERS. Pahlatua, May 26. The District Court was occupied all the morning in hearing a libel action in which Charles Lassen,. Pahiatna, farmer, claimed to recover from Patrick M'Cafferty, Waikorern, farmer, £250, damages for libolj defendant having in several letters to bnsiness firms roforred to plaintiff as a houso-bumer, and of having set fire to tho house of a set-, tier named Ericksen. The jury awarded plaintiff £50 damages, and. costs according to scale. ■' , ■ CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. Talliapa, May 26. The'hearing of the charge against Frederick Garlick, labourer, of attempted murder .of Amos Chatfield on tho night of February 22, by throwing him over the bank of tho Hautapu stream, occupied justices all day yesterday and until this afternoon. Accused and'Chatfield had been in Taihapo, and tho affair happened on the way homo. Both had been drinking. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. SPORTS DISSENSIONS. Wanganul, May 26. At the conclusion of the Caledonian Society meeting the Taranaki and Feilding delegates of tho New Zealand Athletic Union mot and pledged-their respective centres to uphold the union in any penalties it might impose on the AVanganui Caledonian Society. DIED IN A CAB. Chrlstchuroh, Mny S6. A middlc-*ged woman, who arrived in town by .the north train to-night, died in a cab while being driven to a residence. in the city, Hor name, according to a bank book found in her possession, -was Agnes Morton Brown. She was a resident of Christohurch. WANCANUI CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. Wanganul, May 26. At' the annual meeting of the Wanganui Caledonian Society to-night, it was decided not to affiliate with the. New Zealand Athleifc Union. •
