FARMERS' UNION.

SHANNON BRANCH. A meeting of the Shannon branch of tho Farmers' Union was held on Saturday night in the Druids' Hall to discuss tho remils sent in by tho various branches of the union to tho Eketahuna Conference. Air. J. Home, who presided, referred to the union dinner which took place recently in Palmerston North, aud expressed his gratification at having been sent to tho meeting as delegate .to such an interesting and enjoyable function. Tho members present then went into tho matter of remits, tho majority of which they agreed to support. After a good deal of discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. J Mitchell, seconded by Mr. Waring Taylor, to_ withdraw tho following remit:—"That this branch protests in. tho strongest possiblo manner against a portfolio being given to a member who is not responsible to a European constituency." tho Government in presenting a battleship to tho Homo Government) also drew down samo oritieism. It was ultimately decided to request Mr. P. W. Venn, tho local delegate, to make- an addition to the effect that it was very much to bo regretted that the Prime Minister had not first consulted members of Parliament before making, such an. offer. Tho local branch has decided to .present Mr. J. M. Batchelar with a fountain pen in recognition of the manner in which ho has discharged his duties as secretary.
