A qHartcrly return just, issued by Lloyd's Begister for tho quarter ended March 31, shows that there were, 399 vessels (exclusive of warships) totalling 912,272 tons gross, under construction in tho United Kingdom, being about KB.OCO tons more than that which was under construction at tho end of the previous quurtor, and about 65,000 tons more than that bnildiqg twelve months ago. Of tbo vessels referred to, 289, aggregating 543,342 tons, arc being built under' the supervision of Lloyd's enrvsyors, and, in addition to that, 59 vessels, of 152,902 tons, iare being built abroad with a view to being also classified at Lloyd's,' bringing the total np to 348 vessel?, of 696,244 tons. "V"/ The repairs to the Maheno's centre turbine will necessitates a very heavy lift, estimated to bo 25 tons,' it haying beon decided to lift the whole turbine, shaft, etc., out in ono piece for repairing on shore. Owing to tho great hoicht of tho Hahcno's superstructure , the Dnnedin Dock Trust's shcorlegs will.bo unablo to lift tho turbino from its base, consequently. massive sheerlegs are being erected on the vessel under tho supervision of Mr; T. Baairo. Two great. Oregon. soars, wore hoisted into position on Friday, and will be fitted with snecially-mado nulley blocks, to mako a direct lift from the engine-room to tho unper deck. When: this , is accomplished, tho lift will bo transferred to-the dock sheerlegs, and by that means deposited on shore. Tho mass could , bo divided into throo lifts, but owing to the fact that tho rotas will have to bo very delicately balanced nnd conntcr-poised when completed, it , has been deemed advisable to lift it. out ■ and replace it in position all in one niece,—"Otago Daily Times.".- ~. ',•• :>.... ■ ■ - ' LYTTELTON 'SHIPPING. . .: Southern cjclioneci call attention to tho un. usual volumo of shipping at Lyttcltori at the present timo, and state thnt the present will bo ono of. tho busiest wefk3 experienced at liyttclton for several months past. The presence, of sevoral lame vcsEele loadine and unloading at tho nort hes taxed its resources, and absorbed all the availablo labour. The "Press" remnrks thnt there arc only 400 men employed about the Lytt, elton wharves, and calculates that this number will be totally inadequate to moot the domar.ds of veSFels-eoastal. intercolonial, and foreign—visiting the port during the present week.: 'It is stated that tho abnormal activity of both Lyttclton and Timaru is in considerable mensuro due to tho enormous auantity of grain that is being shipped this season to tho United Kingdom; and the suggestion has been made that, in, view of tho probability that labour will bo ronuired for two or threo months at tbo southern ports in larger Quantities. ' It would bo found nrodtablo to send soinn of Wellington's ■ surplne vrharf, labour .to Lyttolton. ■\Vhile shipping is becoming comparatively auiet in Wellington, where there are about 1500 men about the wharves, it has become.-greater at Lyttolton, with'only 400 men. ; Consignees of, shipments ex. baroue LaVcmba, from Liverpool, are notified'to take delivery of their consignments. . .'•■ .
