ORGAN RECITAL.
' i ■ Tho city organist (i\tr. J. Manghan • Barnctt) gave nn organ recital at the Town- Hall last evening. The recital opoiwd with tho "National Anthem," and was'followed by a programme of a popular order. Lcmmon's "Marcho Triomphale," a composition of the florid order, mado a bright opening. It was followed 'by Smart's "Andnnto con moto in A," • qnito a charmine composition in that composer's best style. Wonderful is Iha-life of Dopchoriin's "Minuet, , ' a lightsome dainty dance , turio of other times, other places. This composer held a position in.tho Spanish court in tho latter half of the eighteenth century, but was dismissed, and spont the latter part of his lifo in poverty. Ilis "Minuet" will live a Ion? time yet. Mr. Bnmctt's own '"Fnntnsio on National Airs" \i not a.very attractive number. It Beems as if the composer has done Jus best, to lose-tho melody and significance of tho airs ho utilises,' a.shortcoming that was emphasised last oven-; ing by tho .confusion of sound in tho forto passages occasioned'.'by Hip enho. Why does .-not' tho council wirn'.lho big hall? Other numbers on "tho programme wore nn "Andanlino" by temare, of treasured memory. Elgar's somo.what hnckneyed "land of ITope and Glory"'march, and Weber's festal ".Tnlittco Ovortnro." In "tho dim reliirions- light" that is. allowed fo* : .tli*so recitals tho eorroot idea has at lenclll being struck."-There is light enough to dim! cern tho IcUerinir on tho programme, yet not onouch to distract. ono's mind from "Die ooW , tial strains that do our eonsos . .
