Interesting _ reports wero laid before the Hawke's Bay Land Board to-day by the Crown Lands Ranger;on the Mahora, Tomoana, arid Raureka settlements, which were formerly a part of the Frimlcy Estate, near Hastings. • The Mahora settlement was opened for. solection on March 22, 1899,-and tho area purchased was 1133 acres' 3 roods. Tho number of selectors is 32j and the. total population 170. Ji'hero aro 32 dwelling-houses, val-uc-d; at £7,360. Tho ' improvements eliected by are valued at £12,726 55., as against £3478 18s. lOd. required, by law. Dairying and fruit-growiug are the. principal industries, and poultry and bee-farming are being taken up to some extent, and hayo given satisfactory results. One- of the sottlers, with 50 colonies of bees, netted about 16s. a hivo for the season. Tho Tomoana settlement was placed on the market on March 2, 1898. The area purchased was 111 acres 3 roods 38 perches. Tho number of selectors is 13, and total population 54. The season, says the ranger, has been very favourable for fruit and root crops generally. Tho settlers are contented and'happy. • . .Tho Raureka settlement was placed on the market m May, 1896, the area purchased be-, ing 427 acres 2 roods.
