LOSSES BY FIRE.
AT MARTON. ' EIVE PEEMISES DESEEOTED. OTHERS BAHELY SAVED. I [BI TELIGaiI'H—ruKSS ASSOCIATION.) Marton, May 19. Shortly after midnight yesterday a fire broke out in Mossrs. Marton, Harris, and Ladloy's (solicitors) office in Wellington Road, .resulting in the destruction of several buildings. The fire had obtained a strong hold before tho ' brigade were called out, and a strong north-westerly gale was blowing, bo that tho firo quickly spread to the adjoining premises of Harris and Son, land agents, the Salvation Army Barracks, C. E, Gibbons's cordial factory, and Brico, Broad and Co-'s large stables standing at the back of Main Street. All efforts to stay tho progress of the flames seemed futile, and the buildings mentioned above were soon reduced to ashes. The. Fight by the Brigade. When tho flames had caught the cordial factory, the heat waa terrific, and members of-the Firo Brigade wero working against great odds, their strenuous endeavours to check the flames seeming hopeless. At this stage, however, tho old manual engine was put into motion by willing workers, and a fair pressure was obtained. Tho chemical engines also worked satisfactorily, and the result was that the brigade's efforts to oonfi.no tbo outbreak were successful, and the adjoining building, occupied. and owned by J. C. Trott, bootmaker, was saved. • This was fortunate, as other buildings would almost certainly have gone, including that of Williams, Ingle and Co., and several places on the other side of the street. It was only by the systematic working of tte chemical- engines that the fire was checked. Nearly every resident of Marton turned out to witness the fire, and tie general opinion was that. Trott's premises would certainly share tbto fato , of the burnt buildings,' but it was not so, and it was here that tho work of tho brigade and assisting workers came ■ in for great praise. The outside wall of the cordial factory fell against the wind, which greatly assisted the brigade's efforts. Nothing was saved in Messrs. Harris and LadleyV premises, but the firm's deeds and other valuable documents were fortunately
the Borough Connoil will prevent them bamg patched up. It is anticipated that tie loss above the insurances on the various Btboks will total a considerable amount, as, owing to tho inflammable nature of tie building; only light risks were obtainable. Butemont's browory, which was destroyed by firo at 4 o'clock this morning, was not in use, but, nevertheless, carried a complete brewing plant. Negotiations for its purchase wero proceeding. May .Re-bulld In BrloK. Pressure is being brought to bear on tho Trust Lands Trust to re-erect in brick tho whole block in which tile firo occurred. It is directly opposite the post office, and one of the best business positions in tho town. A Second Alarm. Immediately following this fire, another alarm was soundod. The outbreak was found to be at Butement's brewery, an old, unoccupied building in Cornwall Street, which was destroyed, lie insurance was £100. SAWMILL DESTROYED. Ibi tkieoiuph—rur.sj association.)
