CONCILIATION.

THE WELLINGTON PASTRYCOOKS. ' A Conciliation Council sat for four hours yesterday to consider tho demands submitted by the pastrycooks of' tho Wellington Industrial District. Mr. P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, presided. Tho assessors for tho employers were:: Messrs. J. Godber and E. Carroll (Wellington) and W. Dustin (Wanganui), while those representing the worker's were:' Messrs; Andrew Collins, L. W. Goodchild, and T. Dillon. .'.-... ' ;The -proceedings, which wero .conducted in camera, eventuated in a settlement, of which the following are tho principal features:— Working .hours, 48 hours per week; wages, foreman or first hand, COs.;' second hand, 505.;,. third hand, 455. The usual provisions in regard to apprentices, boarding of employees, and under-rate workmen wero agreed to. Females are not to bo employed-in bakehouses, but may bo employed in finishing work. The holidays usually mentioned in awards aro provided for, aiid instead of any six days in. tho year '..being allowed to tradesmen of 'this i character, a man who is required to work on one of tho holidays named, must bo paid at a special rate. The ordinary starting hours of arc provided for, and overtime must bo paid on all limo in _excess of 45 hours in.any one week, also on time in excess of ten hours in any one day. and time after 1 p.m. on tho statutory half-holiday or Saturday, according to which day may bo selected, by tho employer as the weekly half-hoilday. Tho agreement mil.come into force.as soon as tho Arbitration Court makes it an award, and will remain, in operation until December 31, 1911. It is intended to apply only to those persons, who,carry on .exclusively a pastrycook's .busior to; any par,ty who employs 'a pastrycook exclusively, at that; particular work. Preference to unionists is agreed to en tho samo lines-ns in tho case of.the-Wellington Grocers' Award; that is to say, if,the employees' union does.not find a man within 48 hours of receiving notice, the oniployer ' may take on any man . who . offers.
