HOOD'S CASE.
! ■Sir,—l regret that "Sympathy's"'letter! re the above, is quite out of harmony with his nom do plume. His personal'remarks only beat the air, but I deny his statement that ;"tke only thing.the J.E. could do'.was'to send a helpless, cripple, to gaol." Indeed, Palmerstoii North seems on the road to gaining notoriety for fighting cripples and invalids;, -It-was inthc' power of the sergeant of police .to ask tho relieving officer to place the dying riian under proper care, and it was also '• within tho power. (legally) of that cer to render prompt assistance. Will those in authority ask whether '"the chief police officer appealed to .the relieving officer—perhaps ho did? .. : It was also within thp power'of either the police or the relieving officer to send for'any .available: doctor, and send tho man- to tho local hospital. On their own statements, I assert that, there could riot possibly (apart from'cases of accident) have, been clearer evidence of painful and serious. illne&s than in Hood's case. And, sir, when you add to this.that poor Hood's only crime was poverty, and; ,he was,. according to the police, a "harmless vagraufc," 'tho case looks* very black; Would.Christ have acted 50?.,N0,, a thousand, times No! But his professing /followers did,?; The reasons for having a coroner's jury are so evident that I leave that to your readers' .judgment. : .'■'•. ■ <,'. :■ I would only add that I am glad and grateful ffiat-. we, still have the press 'to 'appeal toi, and through which v men of courage,- like tho.Commonwealth Premier, can preach to a larger audience than any church can hold. .".Leti there bo light.". Thanking you,—l ammeter ', .;,.,.'.■ .HAMAN. .May\17,.1909; ', .V '~-.':''
