AUXILIARY TRAM POWER PLANT.
IS SUCTION GAS StriTABLEP . (BT TEIEOBAPH—SPECUD COEBESPONDENT.) Chrlstchurch, May 18. ■ In view of the suggestion that it might mako use of suction gas as an auxiliary to its present power plant, the Tramway Board recently instructed its engineer. (Mr. 6cott Symington) to report upon the question. Mr. Symington's report was presented to the board yesterday, and was stated to have dealt exhaustively with the efficacy or otherwise of suction gas plants as means for providing power on a large scale. ' Members of tho board, who had perused tho _ document, considered Mr. Symmgton.'s findings to be opposed to the. suitableness of tho system, a large number of instanoes of its failure'being quoted. Mr. A. W. Boaven moved that tie report bo held over until, tho board had an opportunity of considering it. Mr. Fleehcr'moved as an amendment that tho report bo received, in order that it might go out to the public without delay. Mr. Booth said that he hoped, for'the engineer's sake, that tho report would not go forth to the public yet. To condemn pro-' ducor gas, at this stage of its development, was ridiculous. Mr. Symington had quoted cases of its failure, but hundreds of cases in which ft had been a sucoess could also bo quoted. ■ •■ . ■■.-.' Mr. Beavcn said the board had no right to put out Mr. Symington's report as tho last word on suction gas. , ■' The report was held over. , . .
