" At yesterday's meeting of the Tramway Committee of, thoi City Counoil, the annual balancesheet of the Corporation tramways for the yent ending' March 31 was adopted. .The gross rovenue froin all sources amounted to .£136,436, an increase of.Xll/i25, as compared with the. previous year. Tko traffic revenue from city lines amounted to .£121,129, or .£6678 more thnn last , -year; AH lines showed an increase in traffic except Aro Street. The largest increase has been on the Kilbimie line, and. is due principally to the fact that Hhcpe has been a ■ full year ;of Hiramar and Seatoun traffic over this route, as against the traffio of a few months only in tko previous year. The revenue from tho sale of electric current shows a•' very satisfactory - increase, and' there is, says the city electrical engineer, every indication that the direct current power supply will, in the course of time, be a very lucrative business. The working.expenses of power supply and tramways amounted to .£91,672,. as compared with ,£82,838 last year, the principal increases being due, "to the larger service now run and increased expenditure on maintenance'of tracks andcars 1 .. The excessof revenue over working expenses amounted to Out of this nmonrit, interest on loan charges amounting t0..£20,651 has been met, £4934 has, been set'aside for sinking'fund oft loans, and JJI3 242 has been . charged against, revenue as depreciation. The balance, .£5934, represents tho'net surplus on the year's working. ... The total number of passengers earned on city lines was 21,679,902, or. 1,574,179. more than last vear. -The average number carried per oar mile was 10.53, as against 10.28 in the previous year.. The traffic, receipts on city lines arcraged 14.12 d. per car mile, or .4d. more than •last year- Tho car miles, run on all bnes amounted to. 2,203,539, an increase of. 133,947 as compared-with.the'previous, year.-. -.■■.■ - : ■ Included in tho revenue returns are follow,tems:—Karori line-cai: mileage dues, ■«<;«. The general repairs and maintenance' totalled £18,467, including permanent way, ;£isol, electrical equipment of. lino, £2780; buildings and fixtures, £1366; cars, £8677. The power expenses amounted to £14,966, of which salaries wero responsible for £3731; fuel, £8213; and repairs to steam plant, , •'.. Interest' on loans was given ns follows :— Ti-ammiys £19,449; power'supply,' £1202. The , depreciation-"on tramway ;■ properties,' valued ■■ at £467,258, was.' £12,850, and oh power supply: properties valued at. £25,464, £392; a' total of £13,242. ... '.. ■/ ' The'sinking funds are invested as follow:— City. Corporation—22 ■ £100 bonds at ii'por cent., £2200-, 57 ; . £100 debentures in ■ Hunter Street Endowment at i per 'cent., ' £5700';.
