Dr. Dawson Burns, in • His annual letter to The Times," says that in J9OB Britain's national'expenditure on .intoxicating liquors showed the decisive fall of £5,955,718. On spirits the reduction was £2,522,014, on beer £2,541,006, on wines £892,698. ' In 1907 the total cost of liquors was £167,000,000, in 1908.it was £161,000,000. Tho per head consumption was: England, £3 15s; 6d.; Scotland j £2 18s. 9d.; Ireland, £3 Is. Gd. In terms of alcohol, the consumption .of tho United Kingdom equalled 82,849,752' gallons in 1908, or one-eighth gallon, per head.
