CHARGE OF MAKING AND UTTERING. (BY TELEGRAPH—rBESB ASSOCIATION.) '. : , , Hastings, May 13. At the Police Court at Hastings to-day Owen Kelly was charged with making, and having in his possession, and uttering counterfeit coins (gilt sixpenny pieoes). , Detective Hill deposed that on May 5 he was given on the racecourse a gilded sixpence. He saw accused in Market Street and said: "Where did,you get that spurious coin that you passed to Leslie, the bookmaker?" He replied: "I got it. on the course somewhere. -Witness said: "Leslie gave it to you back . again. What haVe you done with it?" and he said "I\ put it on to one of the other 'books,'Darcy." Witness said: "I got that ooin from Darcy. Have you any, more of them?" He.said "No." Witness said: "Turn out yonr-pockets and let mo see." . Ho did so, but there were no spurious coins in what he showed witness. Witness searched him and found two other gilded sixpences in his vest pocket. He told witness ho was working at the freezing works at Pakipaki. Witness and Detective Butler went, to Pakipaki and searched accused's hut,_ They found: a box of ■ gold: paint. Referring to the gold paint, accused - subsequently-said: "I was. a fool to leave that there. That puts a .man away. That is. what I dono the sixpences with. I done eight'or ten of thom. I only put them on to bookmakers. They aro bigger thieves than I am. . I was doing my own good coin in as well. I would put half a sovereign over one of tho 'crook' ones' and have £1 on whatever horse I fancied. I never tried to' change them at any othor place, only with bookmakers." Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial on bail.
