■.-. y ■-■ . — -Q~ MASTEETON: Dealing with the Masterton Trust Land Trust's scholarship endowments, the annual report of the trustees states that a large number of children in ■ Masterton arc now being assisted.in their university education by grants given from tho Trust's funds. The trustees. express pleasure in being able to give such assistanco towards the higher education of the boys and girls who have done credit to'the school and district. I'dr the coming year, grants Lave-been made as follow:—One of £40, aid sixteenof £10 each, making a total of £200. During thoipast year the sum of £250 of the' £1000 loan in connection with the Town Hall has been paid, leaving the indebtedness at.£7so, and this will bo totally extinguished in three years by similar annual payments. The income of the Trust<for the past year was £1380 15s. 2d.— an increase of £65 16s. Id. over that of tho previous year. The present credit balance is £168 17s. 10d..■ ■ -■'. -..: ■... On Monday tho Masterton County: Council's committee, appointed to report on the question of establishing a superannuation fund, met. . On tho motion of -Councillor Welch, seconded by Councillor Kebbell; tho following resolution was carried:—"That this committee- recommends the council to approach the several local authorities in the Wairarapa and Bush districts, and invite their co-operation in establishing a joint fund under-the Local Authorities Superannuation Act, 1908." The recommendation was adopted by the council. , • .--. . ■/-, At a meeting of the Finance Committee of the Masterton Borough Council ' yesterday morning the county engineer advised that he had-made the necessary surveys to enable him to report on.tho scheme for improving tho northern approach: to Masterton. He hoped to submit them at the next meeting of the council.'' Hβ asked Whether it was desired by the council that the scheme should include one bridge or two. The following resohition. was carried:—That the engineer bp adr vised that the committee sees no reason,for departing from tho decision already, arrived at, that there should be no attempt to.confine the, waters of Waipoua River' in ono channelat this point, and that he be directed to furnish alternative estimates of the cost of bridges in wood and ferro-concrete (the latter approximate only). At the meeting of the council in the afternoon the recommendations wero approved. It was reported (that six senior and. three junior teams had entered for the competitions, while four ladies' teams had affiliated. . \ ' ' .. :",-,/ .... •*\LE¥IN. . v ' i The weekly' meeting of the Presbyterian Social and Literary Society was held on lionday evening, when the subject of .debate was, "That .Hope' Exercises a Greater : In-1 fluence in Life than Fear." Mr. A. Fry opened tho discussion, claiming that hopo was the dominating influence/and that no such thing as fear existed in the minds of honest, God-fearing men and women. An .animated debate followed. ; The funeral of the late Patrick Coe, who was killed on the railway between Shannon and Koputaroa.last week, took place on Sun■day. There was a largo attendance' of settlers of the district, including a considerable number of Maoris,- two of whom, in Maori costume, assisted to carry the coffin to the grave. The Rev... J. White (Levin) conducted a service at tho house and at the grave.; ■ >"■■•'■ • ■■•■■ Mr. Cyril Bartholomew, who was so severely injured nearly a fortnight ago, is making progress towards recovery. i A meeting is to be held in a few days to make arrangements for a' boxing tournament under the auspices of the Horowhenua Boxing Association. Mr. W. E. Faulkner is mentioned as a probable candidate for the vacancy in theBorough Council caused by tho retirement of Cr. Levy. Mr. Faulkner polled woll at the recent election. I A. hockey match will, bo played at Levin on Wednesday between Lovin Rovers and Levin. Prospective teams:—Rovers: Crai" Snow, Thome, Pottitt, Cyril Wilson, Noble A. Smart, Butt, Walsh, Walton, and Wilton. Levin: Burns, Farrington,. Hall, Vincent, Parker, Hitchings, Henderson, Saxon, Easther, Wilson, and Anderson. A concert is to be.held shortly • to en--deavour to raise funds to resuscitate tho Levin Town Band. GREYTOWN.' : A competition for. badges is now boing held by. the local firo brigade. It is a oneman engino competition, and tho' first run took, place on Monday evening, when Fireman Coo. camo first with 40 3-ssec, and Fireman Bilby second, with 44 4-ss(!c. (2seo. ponalty), thus giving Coo first place with 1-oscc. to tho good.
