Yesterday afternoon at Halcombo; Detective Quirke arrested a woman named A. 'E. Gardiner on a charge of alleged theft of a hand-bag. containing a gold ring and cash of a total value of £112, the property of Miss J. Buohanan, Napier. Accused and Miss Buohanan were passengers in the train orf April 28 botween Napior and Dannevirke, when tbo theft is alleged to have taken place. Accused was employed in tho hotel at Halcombo as a cook and waitress. Tho missing property was recovered by Dotectivo Quirke. An exchange of headgear at a danco held recently was the causo of a little trouble which culminated at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when Horace Wallaco was charged with appropriating a hat bolonging to Leonard-Madge. In defonce, Wallace said that he had been to the dance, and somoono bad taken his hat. There was only on left in> the froom, and he came to the conclusion that it had been left in place of his, and so. ho took it. Complainant said that his hat had his name stamped in it, and, when he discovered it in possession of Wallace,, some time later, the name had been cut out. His Worship said that Wallace had done wrong in not attempting to find tho owner of the hat with the name in it, and he wonld be fined 105.,' and costs 10s. / .

PAHIATUA,

A football match between Pahiatua and Mangatainoka was played on tho recreation ground on Saturday, the latter winning by fourteen points to eight. Owing to want of condition on the part of players, the game was not_ remarkable for "form," but there is promise of some good players coming forward. Vowell was responsible for two. out of the three tries scored by Mangatainoka, one of which was converted, and Cowan managed to secure a penalty goal, while Yule scored the first'try for Pahiatua. ' Cresswell was also to the fore and secured a try.'

The Wairarapa Hunt Club held a run over theßlairlogie Station on Saturday, when a capital afternoon waa spent, the success of the run being mainly due to tho efforts of Sir. Rupert Morrison. Mr. 0. Bunny laid the drag, and after the kill tho followers were entertained at afternoon tea by the Misses Morrison. ' A football match in tho sonior competition under tho . auspices of tho Horowhenua Rugby' Union took place at Levin on' Saturday, when Levin Wanderers defeated the' Shannon team by 11' points to nil. For tho winners, Novillo Winiata soored two trios and J. 0. Burns one, Rout converting one. Tho Reehabite concert on Friday night N was an attractive function, but tho audience wns scarcoly. up to. expectations. , Tho programme was one of the best produced in-Levin for some time, and tho performers had frequently to respond to encores. Mi's. C. C. Nation opened with an overture on the .'.pianoforte, which was charmingly executed. Tho Scottish song, "Within a Mile o' Edinburgh Toon," was next sung,by Mr. J. Robertson in his, usual good style. Mr. Alex. Newton, of Kaiwarra; followed, with a recitation,, which vastly amused his hearers, who -insisted on a double encore. Mr. W. J. Caton, who is a great, favourite, sang very sweetly. "The. Soldior's Gravo," for which ho was"encored. A violin solo by Miss Aitchison was muoh enjoyed,, and sho. had to comply with an unmistakable recall. Mr. 'J. Devine, who possesses a very deop bass voice, appeared no fewer than four times. A reoitation by Miss Sussex, "Tho Three Lovers," was delivered in her usual inimitablo manner, and Mr. J. Roberston caused much, merriment with his Scottish reading, "Kirsty -M'Nab's Wudden Leg." Mr. and Miss Newton also kept the audibneo in roars of laughter with their musical sketches, and the , audience apparently would have kept them; going. aIU night had they been able. Instrumental trios were given by Messrs. Moon (violin), Lolby ('cello), and James (piano), and by Messrs. Matheson and' Carruthors (mandolines), and Glackin (banjo). These wore admirably played. Mrs. Nation proved a capable accompanist to the singers., Mr. P. W. : Goldsmith, who presided, pointed in tho courso of his remarks that in the reccnt Borough Council election A Reohabito had topped tho poll.

An interesting shooting match took plnco on the Levin Riflo Club's,range, on Saturday.when Mr. Wm. Ingram and his six sons fired against a club team. Mr. Ingram is an old settler in Levin, and a well-blown farmer. The conditions were: seven shots at 200 and 500 yards. Owing to darkness setting in, the men who shot last were rather liandioappod. The Rev. Joseph White has completed liis first year's work as pastor of Levin Presbyterian Churoh, during which time much progress has been made. A session had been constituted, ■ consisting of seven elders, and a managing committco of soven, making fourteen in all. The membership has increased from 39 to 84, and over 70 children havo been enrolled in • the Sunday School. The. choir has been reorganised, a weekly prayer meeting instituted, and a social and literary society formed, all of which show signs of vigour and usefulness.
