Sir Hobert Stout has always been a strong supporter , of the system, of tree, secular, and compulsory education in New' Zealand, and a. vigorous opponent of all attempts to introduce religious instruction in any form." During a recont visit to England.tho Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Neligan) .severely criticised tlio New Zealand system ill so far ns it excluded religious instruction, and, to use his own words, "Made God an extra." This led to somo interesting correspondence between the Bishop and' Sir Robert Stout. When the Bishop was at Home he strongly supported.tho Archbishqp of Canterbury's, proposed compromise in order to avoid the secular solution i but now a different voice'.from New Zealand is heard, for Sir Robert Stout opposes both the Anglican and Nonconformist proposal, and advocates 'a system of complete secularism; 1
