DEBATING SOCIETIES UNION.

• ' ANNUAL MEETING. I Thelannual, moeting 'of delegates to tho. Wul- ! lington Literary and' Debating Societies Union was held in the Y.M.C. A. Rooms, last night. - The report stated that tho unions fourth 'season'., passed' off. most successfully, lv/clve societies;. were now,; affiliated, arid nine took part in the'annual debating.tournament in the Town/Hall Concert Chamber, .which r ,was won by the .Victoria College Society.: Mr. J,. M. Hogben,' of the same society, was the winner of the oratorical competition. It was not possible,as anticipated, .' to . carry, out competitions covering . literary, • elocutionary, and similar branches of work, but it was, hoped to do something in this.'dii'ection during tho coming season;/. /'lt was also hoped that the •debating contest . with the ; Wangamii Union would becomo. an 'annual event. /Thnnks to officers, of- contests, and . others, concluded tho report.'. ;■ !: /; Officers for tho ensuing year were elected as follow:—Patron,- Sir Robert Stout; president, the Mayor (Dr. Newman); vice-president, liv. J. 11. A. Ilott; lion, secretary, Air. J. B. Jordan; hon. treasurer, Mr. M. O'Kane; executive, the officors, and Mcssfß. H. N. Holmes, R. Kennedy, and A. E, Budd. The meeting passed a, vote of thanks to Mr. A.' H. Casey; who has retired from the vicepresidency, after being actively connected with the union since its inception. .
