;;- ; ; BAKERS' DISPUTE. : ; i - ' ■'■ [BT TEDEOBAPH—PBBSS .iSSOCiATIOH.IA' ■"<:'- ■. v ■.•■..'■■■■■■■■'.■• Hamlltohi May 6. ■',The Arbitration.Court, sat here this morning to hear the country bakers' dispute. ;: Mr. Veale, secretary.of. the - Auckland Operative Bakers' and Pastrycooks' Association, in presenting the case, said there was no; desire to hamper' the industry, .but ho thought certain-words in the country award required alteration. The chief: points, put forward for consideration by tWCourt were:. hour of starting, wages, and .overtime. With regard to the'former, the union asked that the time: worked before 4 a.m. be paid at double rates, and that an eight-hour day ;b« fixed in lieu of a nine-hour one, , as un"dor'the present award.'. , ; ■ Evidence/was given by journeymen and master bakers. It'went to show that only under exceptional circumstances more than eight I hours were worked. Tho present award worked satisfactorily, and gave no trouble. .' Mr. • Vjaalp- contended that some- of the employers' took advantage of the men. Ho did not agree, that there was perpetual peace between,the.country bakers and,the men.' The Court intimated that judgment, would be delivered to-morrow morning, after which the carters' dispute will bo hoard.
