STREET WIDENING.
LETTER-TO THE CITY COUNCIL., -During the .course of the.business transacted by the City Council •■' yesterday after the Mayoral installation ceremony a letter was received from Messrs. Skerrctt 'and AVylie in reference to the council's decision to take over the. whole of Messrs.. Pike and Bate's section : in ' Willis Street for'street-widening purposes, and not to-issue them a building permit. "This, of course," the letter proceeds, "is not an answer to.our request that a permit should be issued in accordance with the application made some; time- ago. We-are instructed to at once issue K a writ against tho council to compel tho- issue of the permit. We .may mention, however, without prejudice, that! if the council will immediately entor into an agreement with our clients that in tho event of the land not being taken, tho council' will pay to our clients the sum of £10 per week from tho date when Iho permit ought to have been issued up to tho date of the proposed proclamation taking tho land, our clients will bo willing to allow the matter to stand over. '■■'..
" The; Town Clerk (Mr. ;J; E. Palmer) stated that the proclamation would be ready in the course of a day or two. ■ .
Councillor Luko moved that a reply bo sent informing tho writers that tho council cannot agree to tho request, as tho council is going on with tho street-widening. ' . Councillor M'Laren seconded"the motion. . Re thought ho was right in saying that when tho last communication was beforo the council thev wanted £h per week for the delay. Now it had gone up. '"It seems an extraordinary way of handling tho council," ho commented. l Tho motion was carried.
