' Some fifty men students assembled at Victoria College'on Saturday evening for the purpose of forming a Men's Common Room Club, > the chief object of which will be to bring the men students of the college into touch with one another socially Professor Hunter, who occupied the chair, emphasised, the vneed ,for some such club to give students, a better idea of what university life should be, and to extend .the university life here beyond the class-room. He referred' to the success of such : clubs in the older universities of - the world, and mentioned particularly a . visit he - paid to such a club at the Cornell University (U.5.A.).: A subsequent speaker • referred to : ; the fact that the real life of Oxford and Cambridge was in the residential colleges, which the New Zealand University unfortunately lacks," aud pointed. out ; that in the absence'of such colleges 'a social club would be the best .way to bring' students together, so that they • will really get to know one another. The meeting, which was a most enthusiastic one ; unanimously decided that the time is ripe 'foi J the formation of a Common. Room Club; A ■ constitution for the club was then adopted, 0 The constitution provides that past students oi a the college and graduates aro eligible foi - membership, in addition to present students., & The officers for the; ensuing year were then 3 elected as follow-.—Patron, Professor T. A. 1 Hunter; president,, Mr. W. Perry, LL.B.; viceS residents, Messrs.' J. F. Thompson and J. M, [ogben; hon. secretary, Mr. T. N. Holmden i hon. treasurer, Mr. E. Wright; committee Messrs. J. L; Short, A. T. Duncan, E. C '• Prcndeville, and J. W. Heenan; hon auditor Mr A. E. Dobbie. The club will find its per : ' manent quarters in the College Gymnasium and social hall, whiih is now being erected, and which should bo completed in about sis ~ weeks' '**mp ■
