THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBi Glencoe.l Nominations for tho winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club closo on Friday. Mr. C. O'Connor, tho 'Wellington Racing Club's starter, arrived from tlio north yesterday evening. Ambola.who is engaged in tho Plunkot Nursery Handicap to-aay.. is a sister to Indian Queen, tho aam of King Billy and Aborigine. • Rangihaeta, who was brought to Trentham on Monday evening, is not engaged to-day, but if the weights suit lie will be a starter; in the hurdles on Saturday, and will be ridden by C. Price. B. Deeley will rido Courier in tho Railway Handicap at Trentham this afternoon. . ;Aorangi,' after doing a round on tho! grass yesterday, was tried over a oouplo of hurdles, which he cleared nicely. Official scratchings in connection with today's races aro: Euclid for tho Thompson Handicap,' and Swallow for the Tinakori Handicap. • ■ . ' As Sir Geo. Clifford has Taskmaster and Thistledown engaged in the. Challenge Stakes to-day, it is quite'on the cards that the St. Leger candidate, Husbandman,-will bo withdrawn. i Nautiform always gallops with; Bis head' very high, but he'does not appear to lack pace on that account. Ho is' to be ridden at Trentham by tho Auckland horseman, B. Deeley. , . ' At tho time of writing,, it looks tfs- if tho hurdlo race at the Trentham meeting to-day will bo a capital contest, as ; several of the candidates appear to bo galloping much about tho samo on the flat. Aboriginal and -Sunbonnet aro the- only 1 candidates engaged in the Thompson Handicap to-day that contested that ©vent last year. . . Bobrikoff's gallop at Trentham yesterday' astonished oven -some of the old; trainers,' who wore by no means prepared to see him dispose of his paoemakers in such easy fashion as-ho did. J. Buchanan, of Auckland, will ride Mr. T. H. Lowry's horses in their engagements this afternoon. : • The English three-year-old Bayardo rc-' oently, met -with an accident which it was foared. might interfere with his preparation for the Two Thousand Guineas and. the Derby. . • Downfall is at Trentham, but ho claims 110 engagement to-day. Ho may, however, bo among the starters on Saturday. Sires represented in tho Thompson Handicap this afternoon aro Stcpniak, Soult, Merri<i r ee, Birkenhead, Clanranald, San Francisco, Conqueror, Seaton. Dela'val, Gold Reef, Sir Lauucelot, San' Fran/ Morrio England, Advance, Menschikoff, Persimmon, and Papakura. Tho first four named each have two representatives'.. . The times recorded in yesterday's gallops prove that tho Trentham''track . is gradually becoming faster as the grass imprbvos, and in time it Dids fair to rival Randwick and Riccarton as a record-producer. Half a dozen horses from tho Hutt were taken up to Trentham' yesterday afterncion in order' to : fulfil 1 their engagements to-day and on Saturday. • ■ ' • • \ . .Mr. W. E. Bidwill, owner of the chapipion two-year-old, Provocation, and the Thompson Handicap, candidate, Consolation, visited Trentham yesterday to have a' look at tho horses named. With fine weather, ii is anticipated that .there will be a good attendance at tho Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Club's meeting l at Miramar on Friday afternoon. Satisfactory acceptances "have been recoivod for the two principal handicaps, and there should bo average, fields -throughout- the day. The whole- of the profits at .'this meeting are! to bo, devoted to Wellington charities. ' A month or' two ago, tlio death' was reported from England of Knight of Malta;' the half-brother to the defunct Pilgrim's Progress, and recent files to hand record the death of another half-brother, Jeddah, who won the. Dprby in IS9BJ Jeddah's victory in the Blue llibbon event was remarkable because ho, is one of the . biggest outsiders that ever prevailed in that race. 'As. a two-year-old he never got on .the winning list, but a':victory in the early part of his three-year-old career caused him' to bo supported'for, tho Derby; but'a defeat, followed by poor track form, caused him to go right out of favour,; and on-the day of tho raco he was not in demand.' Ridden by 0." Madden, he upset the public calculations, but was subsequently defeated in the St. Leger' by WildHower, and after being defeated'tho following year by Flying Fox, he was-re-tired.to tho stud. , , :, --TRAINING _NOTES FROM TRENTHAM.
