RIFLE SHOOTING.
; CUSTOMS v. MERCANTILE, Evidently the recent talk of combulsory. service has roused the military spirit of his Majesty's Cnstoms officers in, Wellington. On Saturday they engaged in a rifle match with a team representing Cnstoms agents and clerks of .' the mercantile houses. - The rivalry was very keen,' '"hulls" being; at? a premium. The match was 'originally fixed for, 200 and ' 500 yards, but owing "to the. strong wind blowing it-.was: impossible to . larger targets.. Consequently the small targets at 200 yards ivere used a second time.' Considering the poor light and heavy; wind the shooting was very fair. "At the end of the' first round the Customs officers ' were 55points behind, but/ in the' second, they improved considerably, and only dropped a further 10 points, the mercantile team winning by 65 points after an enjoyable contest. At the ; conclusion, Mr. Marshall,: for the mercantile team, in expressing pleasure in meeting .tho; Customs men, hoped that the "explanation" put up by the mercantile competitors would be accepted without a "fine." ; Mr Paul, in responding , on. behalf of the, Cnstoms, said ' that in this pase.innder Section 999,- "the explanation" would be - accepted, but. the "Mercantile" to be more careful in'the next were < determined to secure., ji;!. ?Post:":■;The scores,, seven '• shots at /eaoH-range,'} were.itsfollow:—, • , •' Mercantile Team, ,; -.7:
